Introduction to Neurodiversity
Neurodiversity Basics
Neurodiversity is a relatively new term that has been created to embrace and appreciate the variety within human brain functioning and cognition. Neurodiversity is looking to change the way we view certain diagnoses and move them from disorders to neurotypes. Neurodiversity is a strengths-based approach and recognizes that we need people of all types to make society what it is!
Neurodiversity is applicable to diagnoses such as:
Autism Spectrum
ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder)
Dyslexia
and many others
One of the most important aspects of working with the neurodiverse community is to understand that they are the experts in their own experiences. While the thoughts and experiences of loved ones of neurodiverse individuals should be respected, they should never take precedent over those who are neurodiverse.
Nothing About Us Without Us
To combat the exclusion of neurodiverse people from organizations that are meant to be benefitting them, activists have begun using the slogan "nothing about us without us." It's important when choosing organizations to support, that you ensure there are individuals representing that community on its board and within its leadership.
